Calabria

Calabria

From Ionian-sea-facing Cirò to interior vineyards.

01 / GEOGRAPHY

Topography and Growing Environment

Located between the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, with mountains inland. Cirò is on the Ionian side. Even in a region bordered by two seas, conditions differ between coastal and mountainous zones, so it is necessary to look at both proximity to the sea and elevation.

02 / HISTORY

Historical and regional background

Connections to ancient Greece form part of Calabria’s regional history. However, from that alone, we cannot conclude that the same grape varieties or methods as today’s Cirò were used in antiquity. Information on the region’s long history and on the conditions of today's appellations should be confirmed from separate sources.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Varieties and Appellation Comparison

In Ciro, Gaglioppo is a key to understanding the reds, and other growing areas, such as around Cosenza, also exist. Adding names like Magliocco and Greco Bianco illustrates varietal differences within the province. Calabria is the region, Ciro is the appellation/wine region, and Gaglioppo is the grape variety—this is the basic classification.
