FIELD NOTE 01

Broaden the selection of white wine grape varieties.

When studying Tokaj, focus on Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Sárga Muskotály. Furmint is not only used for sweet wines but also for dry. After seeing the grape variety, check the condition of the harvested grapes and the winemaking method.

Around Balaton, Olaszrizling is typical; in Somló, Juhfark is also important. By learning combinations of regions and grape varieties, it becomes easier to progress beyond Tokaj whites.

FIELD NOTE 02

Organize similar names

Olaszrizling corresponds to Welschriesling and is a different variety from Rhine Riesling. Even if 'rizling' is in the name, it is not necessarily the same grape as Riesling studied in Germany.

The red grape Kékfrankos is known as Blaufränkisch in Austria and Lemberger in Germany. Since grape names change across borders, a one-line note listing synonyms is very helpful.

FIELD NOTE 03

Single variety and blend

Also add Kadarka, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and others as major red wines to study. Kékfrankos is encountered both as a single varietal wine and as a component of Bikavér.

Do not place grape varieties and blend names in the same field. When comparing two wines, first check the varietal composition, then proceed to skin contact and barrel aging. The overall taste of the finished wine should not be determined solely by the inclusion of the same grape variety.
