FIELD NOTE 01

Link whites to their regions.

Grüner Veltliner is the focus variety for Weinviertel DAC and is also an important white in Wachau. For Riedenwein in Wachau, it is one of the eligible grapes along with Riesling. Don’t just memorize the names—link them as pairs with their permitted labeling designations.

In Steiermark, the focus expands to Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Morillon, and others. Morillon is the local name for Chardonnay and is not a separate variety.

FIELD NOTE 02

Zweigelt's parents

Zweigelt is a cross between St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. It provides an introduction to the reds of Neusiedlersee DAC. Blaufränkisch is also explored in reds such as Eisenberg.

Even if the varieties are related by hybridization, they do not always share the same aromas or cultivation traits. Record both variety genealogy and finished wine flavor separately. Also include barrel or extraction differences in your comparisons.

FIELD NOTE 03

Rosé from black grapes

Schilcher made from Blauer Wildbacher is known as a rosé from Styria. Distinguishing between variety name and wine name broadens understanding beyond 'it's a red grape so only red wine'.

In review, diagram "Morillon = Chardonnay," "Zweigelt’s parentage," and "Schilcher grape" on separate lines. Synonyms, pedigree, and raw material to product are not the same relationships.
