FIELD NOTE 01
Map the southern hills
Villány, along with Siklós, forms Hungary’s southernmost wine region. The area’s description features south- and east-facing slopes on hills and terrain that blocks cold air from the north. Don’t treat the whole country as equally cool—consider the positional differences from Tokaj or Eger in the northeast.
FIELD NOTE 02
Labeling as “Franc”
Villányi Franc is a regional designation centered on Cabernet Franc. The categories Premium and Super Premium must also be read together. The official explanation states that Super Premium is 100% Cabernet Franc, while for Premium, the use of other varieties is permitted under certain conditions, which are explained in the regulations.
Do not assume without exception that seeing the single word “Franc” means 100% single variety. Checking the label category and year of application helps reduce misreading the regulations.
FIELD NOTE 03
There is not just a single type of regional red.
Portugieser is also a traditional local variety, and is part of the labeling for wines such as Villányi Redy. It's important to combine focused study on Cabernet Franc with an understanding of varieties across the region.
For comparison, organize the varieties, categories related to yield and maturation, and actual winemaking practices. Record the minimum regulations and the maturation period practiced by the producer as separate information in your notebook.
Distinguish the criteria for Premium and Super Premium. Check the official classification and technical documents.
