FIELD NOTE 01
To the inland of the Peloponnese
Nemea is an inland region of Peloponnese. There is an altitude difference from lower to higher areas, with variation in slope orientation and ripening periods. In addition to latitude differences with Naoussa in the north, confirm the differences in conditions within the region.
FIELD NOTE 02
PDO and red grape varieties
PDO Nemea is a red made from 100% Agiorgitiko. Styles range from wines made for fresh fruitiness in youth to those with more extraction and aging. Sweet wines are also included, so don't always assume a PDO means the wine is dry.
If you check where the harvest took place, the ripeness, fermentation, and vessels in producer documents, you can see how the same grape variety is guided into different styles.
FIELD NOTE 03
Cautions when comparing with Naoussa.
When comparing Naoussa and Nemea, both the variety and the region change. Not all differences can be explained by latitude alone. The comparison table separates geography, varieties, extraction, and maturation in independent rows.
Start by comparing the same grape variety within each region; then, reading across both regions deepens understanding. Rather than attributing a tasting result to a single cause, it’s better to separate the verifiable conditions from possible factors.
Varieties, altitude, extraction, and maturation all differ. Sort and clarify each condition for comparison.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
