FIELD NOTE 01

Stages of place of origin

Decreto 464 distinguishes wines with DO, without DO, and wines made from table grapes. Geographic indications include region, subregion, zone, and area. Smaller place names define the scope of origin, but the precision of the place name alone does not determine the quality of taste.

FIELD NOTE 02

Basics within the country and export conditions

For DO’s mention of regional origin, single-variety, and vintage, domestic law generally requires at least 75% for each. However, different requirements, such as 85%, may apply in export markets. Avoid memorizing that 'Chile is always 75%' or that export wines can be judged only by domestic law.

FIELD NOTE 03

Show supplement for east and west

Costa, Entre Cordilleras, and Andes are supplementary indications requiring more than 85% origin from the specified region. These divisions indicate the influence of the sea, central lowlands, or Andes, not stages of ageing.

Key points of this article

Not possible. Supplementary labels such as Costa also have another requirement of at least 85% from the specified region.

PAUSE & REFLECT
