Reading Chilean quality terms

How many years of aging does Reserva indicate?

Even if the term is the same as in Spain, in Chile it’s used under different conditions.

RELATIONSHIPS

How many years of aging does Reserva indicate?: Comparative Perspectives

Reading Chilean quality terms

Read geography, grape resources, and production processes separately.

  • Reserva

Adding to minimum levels, etc. Oak treatment is optional.

  • Reserva Especial / Gran Reserva

Wood treatment is required. It does not mean a shared minimum barrel aging period.

FIELD NOTE 01

Apply the aging period later, not first.

Even if you look at Reserva in Chile, you cannot directly apply the minimum aging periods of specific DOs in Spain. Decreto 464 sets criteria for alcohol content, organoleptic characteristics, and contact with wood, but it does not specify a universal minimum aging period in years for this term.

FIELD NOTE 02

Distinguish the handling of wood

Reserva must have an alcohol content at least 0.5% higher than the minimum required by law and does not necessarily require wood treatment. Reserva Especial, with the same increment, does require wood treatment. Gran Reserva must be at least 1% higher than the minimum and requires wood treatment.

FIELD NOTE 03

Check at the end of the label

Do not automatically interpret legal requirements for wood treatment to mean long-term aging in all-new barrels. Supplement data on vessel, duration, and new barrel ratio from producer sources. Separating the statutory information from producer-specific winemaking allows for more accurate comparisons with Reserva wines from other countries.

Key points of this article

I don't know. There are conditions for wood treatment, but specific new barrel ratios or aging durations in months require producer documentation.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.
