Latitude and the Pacific

Read geography, grape resources, and production processes separately.

  • North and south

From the north to the central and southern regions.

  • East-West

Consider the environments indicated by Costa, Entre Cordilleras, and Andes.

FIELD NOTE 01

The sea and two mountain ranges

The Pacific Ocean lies to the west, the Andes to the east, and in between are the Coastal Range and the Central Valley running north to south. Coastal areas are affected by cool sea breezes and fog from cold currents, while on the mountain side, elevation and nighttime cooling are key. Vineyards at the same latitude can ripen at different rates.

FIELD NOTE 02

Place the large regions in order

The wine law's regions follow from north to south: Atacama, Coquimbo, Aconcagua, Central Valley, Southern, and Austral. Maipo, Rapel, Curicó, and Maule belong to Central Valley. Current regulations also mention Chiloé and Rapa Nui, so do not fix the southernmost end by older maps.

FIELD NOTE 03

Two study routes

There are two study routes: from Maipo’s Cabernet Sauvignon to Rapel’s Carménère, and from coastal whites to the old vines of the south. Don’t learn only about Chile from the depth of the reds—connect it to the environments that preserve acidity and the use of traditional varieties.

Key points of this article

The differences arise from sea breezes, fog, altitude, and the location of mountains. There are also cool-climate coastal vineyards in the north.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

If you predict the weight of Chilean wine only from latitude, what will you miss?
