Altitude, latitude and water

Overview of Argentina

On the dry eastern side of the Andes, managing light and water use is crucial.

Altitude, latitude and water

Read geography, grape resources, and production processes separately.

  • Altitude

Change the ripening conditions between the north and Mendoza.

  • Latitude

Consider the environment of southern Patagonia.

  • Water

Cultivation in dry regions is supported by irrigation.

FIELD NOTE 01

Northern highlands and southern latitude

Even though the northwest has a low latitude, vineyards are found at high elevations; in Mendoza, altitude differences create regional distinctions. Patagonia lies further south. By separating coolness into altitude and latitude, you avoid describing the entire country with just high-altitude Malbec.

FIELD NOTE 02

Drying and irrigation

In arid western regions, irrigation using water from the mountains supports viticulture. Even with sufficient sunlight, stable growth isn’t possible without enough water. Assess vineyard conditions by considering both soil water retention and irrigation management.

FIELD NOTE 03

Both sides of strong sunlight

At higher elevations, temperature drops but sunlight becomes more intense. Canopy management to avoid overexposing fruit, and measures to counter frost and hail, are also important. It isn’t a simple ranking of 'the higher, the better': the focus should be on finding conditions where each variety ripens properly.

Key points of this article

Incorrect. While altitude lowers temperatures, it increases sunlight intensity, and measures to protect the fruit are also necessary.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

Can you describe high-elevation wines as 'from cool vineyards with weak sunlight'?

Read the explanation +

Incorrect. While altitude lowers temperatures, it increases sunlight intensity, and measures to protect the fruit are also necessary.
