Tempranillo: understanding Iberian synonyms and maturation labeling
We compare the appellations of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Portugal. Evaluate the ripening characteristics of early-ripening varieties, and independently compare barrel/bottle maturation.
Questions for this course
Is a variety name change the same as a change in winemaking?
Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Names that cross borders
Tinto Fino and Tinta del País in Ribera del Duero are names for Tempranillo. In Portugal, it is called Aragonez or Tinta Roriz. By matching these names, you can compare wines made from the same grape variety on both sides of the border. Check details on blending partners and their proportions in the respective wine resources.
Early ripening and vineyard environment
Tempranillo is a comparatively early-ripening variety. However, harvest dates and ripening progress vary by vineyard. Official materials for Rioja also explain differences between Atlantic-influenced regions and the more Mediterranean Rioja Oriental. If you consider altitude and wind, you will see that even the term 'Rioja' cannot cover all viticultural conditions.
Differentiate between ripeness and maturation.
The timing of grape ripening in the vineyard and the period wine spends aging in barrel or bottle are distinct. In Rioja’s Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva, specific aging conditions exist. These are not grape varieties. Read the age category on the label, and use technical sheets for barrel types and actual time periods to compare producers’ practices in detail.

Reading Tempranillo materials: understanding Iberian synonyms and maturation labeling
Use imaginary references to organize information about synonyms, blends, and aging periods.
This is a hypothetical example for learning. It is not a question to determine a legal classification based on aging period.
| Item | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| Regions | Spain | Portugal |
| Blending | Tempranillo 100% | Tinta Roriz 70%、Touriga Nacional 30% |
| Barrel aging. | 12 months | 6 months |

Which varieties are common to both?
Tempranillo is also called Tinta Roriz in Portugal. Even if the country or spelling is different, these two names refer to the same grape variety. Touriga Nacional is a different grape.
Which sentence describes B?
B is a blend of 70% Tinta Roriz and 30% Touriga Nacional.
What is the difference between the 12 months and 6 months indicated in the table?
Distinguish between a grape's early-ripening nature and the barrel aging period after fermentation. From the table you can see A has a long barrel aging, but cannot know the earliness of harvest or vine age.

Explain in your own words
Explain that the same grape variety is used in both A and B, but the blends and aging processes are different.
Check after writing
- Did you match up the synonyms?
- Did you list the blending partner(s)?
- Are ripeness and maturation being confused?
