Bodegas Muga: fermentation and maturation of Prado Enea
Bodegas Muga is a family-run Rioja producer founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño. Based in the Haro station district, they produce wines such as Prado Enea. Here, we track the 2019 Gran Reserva through each stage from fermentation to maturation in barrel and bottle.
Prado Enea 2019 is fermented in wooden vats and spends a long time in both barrel and bottle. Even though wooden containers are used for both fermentation and ageing, their roles are different, and this distinction should be verified.
Questions for this course
When explaining use of wooden containers, does this refer to fermentation or aging?
Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Harvesting grapes from higher-altitude sites later
For the 2019 Prado Enea, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, and Mazuelo are used. The grapes come from vineyards at 550–700m altitude in the northwest part of Rioja Alta, and the producer explains that grapes from the latest ripening areas are picked last. Do not determine the taste by altitude numbers alone, but read the choice of harvest in conjunction.
Fermentation in wooden vats and barrel aging are separate processes.
Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in oak vats, accompanied by gentle remontage and a 14–16 day maceration. Barrel aging that follows lasts a minimum of 36 months, using primarily French oak and partly American oak. Saying ‘uses wood’ alone leaves out which vessels are used in which processes.
At least 36 months even after bottling
After maturation, the wine is clarified with egg whites before bottling, then spends at least 36 months in bottle. The period in barrel and in bottle are consecutive, separate processes. These figures describe the production of Prado Enea 2019 and do not represent minimum requirements for all Gran Reserva wines in Rioja.

Bodegas Muga material analysis: fermentation and maturation of Prado Enea
Compare the stated conditions in the documentation. Numbers specifying vintages should be treated as information for that specific year.
This summarizes materials published by producers, regional groups, and importers. Each source includes the publisher and the date the material was checked.
| Comparison items | What can be determined from the materials | Ability to distinguish by reading |
|---|---|---|
| Raw materials in 2019 | Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo | The material does not show any blend ratios. |
| Fermentation and barrel aging | Fermentation in wooden vats and maceration for 14–16 days, followed by at least 36 months in barrels. | Mainly French oak, partially American oak |
| Before and after bottling | Fined with egg whites, aged for at least 36 months in bottle | Do not treat the steps for a specific label as the minimum requirement for the entire appellation |

What blend information can be learned from the 2019 documentation?
The documentation lists Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, and Mazuelo, but no proportions. Do not supplement with blends from another year or assume equal parts; explain only what can be confirmed for this vintage.
What period is indicated by 14–16 days?
The 2019 description states that maceration during fermentation in wooden vats lasts 14–16 days. Subsequent barrel aging is at least 36 months, so subjects and time units differ. The key point is to distinguish between the use of wooden containers for fermentation and for maturation.
What does “minimum 36 months in barrel, minimum 36 months in bottle” notation mean?
The numbers in this document pertain to the production of Prado Enea 2019. The bottling process follows barrel aging, and the discussion is not about parallel aging for each grape variety. Confirm separately the specifications of individual products and the minimum requirements established by the appellation of origin.
