Taittinger: Proportion of Chardonnay and village sources

This is a Champagne house based in Reims. The Brut Réserve blends all three principal varieties, while the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs is made from Chardonnay.

We compare Brut Réserve and Comtes’ Blanc de Blancs, looking at both their blend and origin villages.

Three-variety Brut Réserve

The official explanation states that the Brut Réserve is 40% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, and 25% Meunier. Focusing on Chardonnay is not the same as making the wine solely from Chardonnay.

Chardonnay from five villages

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs uses Chardonnay from Avize, Cramant, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Chouilly. Even with a single variety, the grapes do not come from just one village.

Read until the latter part of the producer name.

There is also a rosé in the Comtes de Champagne range. If you generalize the explanation for Blanc de Blancs to the whole line, you might mistakenly assume that even the rosé is 100% Chardonnay. Record the label and the color together.

By answering in the selection field, you can compare your answers and explanations using the top button. Freeform responses will not be automatically graded.

Is Brut Réserve Chardonnay only?
The explanation of 40% does not indicate a single variety.

What is the grape variety for Comtes Blanc de Blancs?
Read the number of varieties and villages separately. While meeting the condition of Chardonnay alone, combine Avize, Chouilly, Oger, Le Mesnil, and Cramant. The name 'Blanc de Blancs' does not indicate whether it's from a single village or vineyard.

Can you use the white wine description for rosé as well?
The shared name “Comte” alone does not determine the composition.
