FIELD NOTE 01
The establishment of Greppo and Brunello
Biondi-Santi is a producer associated with the formation history of Brunello. Their official history cites an 1888 wine, providing material to understand their work with Sangiovese and aging.
This year is noted in relation to the producer’s history. It does not necessarily mean current appellation rules were established that year.
FIELD NOTE 02
Producer’s policies and general regulations
Wine styles adopted for a long time by a single producer and the regulations applied to all of Montalcino are pieces of information covering different scopes. Even for a producer representing a region’s history, their particular specifications are not necessarily shared by all producers.
Appellations set shared conditions, and within these, producers make individual decisions. By separating history and regulatory systems, their relationship becomes clear.
FIELD NOTE 03
Materials by Vintage
From the producer’s history you can study the background of their approach, and from the materials of individual wines you can check vineyard and winemaking/maturation specifications. For the latter, it’s necessary to confirm which vintage the information refers to.
By not simply applying past wine records to current bottles, but by aligning vintages, you can verify what has been carried on.
The 1888 record is part of the producer’s history; current Brunello regulations should be read as appellation requirements.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
Is Biondi-Santi’s traditional method of production common to all current Brunello producers?
Read the explanation +
Not necessarily common. You need to distinguish between producer policies or specifications for individual vintages, and the regulations set by the appellation for all producers.
