FIELD NOTE 01

Located on the eastern side of the mountains

Southeastern North Island: Vineyards are east of the Tararua Range. River terraces and well-drained soils are important, and Pinot Noir grown in this cool environment is the cornerstone of the region. On the map, note not just the north-south of the country, but also the positioning relative to the mountains.

FIELD NOTE 02

Distinguish the three names.

Cover Masterton, Gladstone, and Martinborough from north to south. Martinborough is not another name for the entire Wairarapa. If you compare the areas without matching their size, as with Central Otago, you end up viewing different scopes.

FIELD NOTE 03

Make comparisons of Pinot more concrete

When comparing Pinot of the same year, record not only the kind of fruit, but also tannin grain, toastiness, and length. There are also Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, so it’s important not to restrict the region to one single grape variety.
