Central Otago: Inland Pinot: Comparison Perspectives

Central Otago

Read geography, grape resources, and production processes separately.

  • Gibbston

High elevation, cool climate. Tends toward slower ripening.

  • Bannockburn

A location within the region that is warm and dry.

  • Wanaka

Consider the temperature-moderating effects of lakes as well.

FIELD NOTE 01

Continental climate with wide variations

Central Otago is surrounded by mountains, with hot summers, cold nights, and severe winters being key factors. Primarily Pinot Noir is grown, with Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay also produced. The broad description of the country as ‘maritime’ doesn’t capture the full range of this region.

FIELD NOTE 02

Gibbston and Bannockburn

Gibbston, situated at higher altitude, is relatively cool and tends to ripen late. Bannockburn has warmer, drier sites within the region. Even in the same harvest year, not all subregions reach ripeness at the same time.

FIELD NOTE 03

Add slopes to lakes

In Wanaka, the lake helps mitigate frost. The north-facing slopes of Bendigo receive more sunlight, and Alexandra is notable for its large temperature swings. In the southern hemisphere, remember that north-facing means the sunniest side, which should be considered differently from European maps.

Key points of this article

Because these slopes receive sunlight more easily. Do not simply apply the European approach of always remembering south-facing slopes.
