FIELD NOTE 01
Different from Villány, even in the South
Szekszárd is a hilly wine region close to the Danube River. Like Villány, it is learned as a southern red, but it is a different origin. You should check the hilly terrain, slopes, and the relationship with surrounding flatlands on a map.
Even if 'less' (res) appears in a regional explanation, do not directly replace it with a specific aroma. Soil information is material for thinking about moisture and cultivation conditions, not for deciding a tasting impression with a single word.
FIELD NOTE 02
Kadarka and Kékfrankos
Kadarka and Kékfrankos are pivotal to your main studies. Kadarka has a long history of cultivation and red winemaking, but it is necessary to confirm the contents of current brands using technical sources.
When comparing single-varietal reds and blends, record separately extractions from the skins, vessels, and maturation time. Even wines from the same region won’t necessarily have the same winemaking choices.
FIELD NOTE 03
Read the appellation name as well for Bikavér
The name Bikavér is not limited to Eger; it is also found in Szekszárd. Do not omit the place name on the label or directly apply the Eger rules elsewhere.
For the comparison exercise, set Egri and Szekszárdi as parallel columns and examine the grape composition and classification of each. After identifying any commonly used names, aim to be able to explain what is shared and what is unique to each region.
Since Secsárd also exists, always check the region name. Confirm the grape varieties and production conditions for each area.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
Is it correct to use Bikavér regulations from Eger just from hearing the term 'Bikavér'?
