FIELD NOTE 01

The Great Bend of the Rhine

Rheinhessen spreads around Mainz, Bingen, Worms, and Alzey, surrounded to the north and east by a large sweep of the Rhine. Contrasting its gentle hills with the steep slopes of the Mosel helps clarify location and topography.

It is a separate production area from Rheingau, and despite similar names, they should not be lumped together. On the map, confirm which side of the river each is on.

FIELD NOTE 02

Spread of white varieties

In addition to Riesling, there are Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, and Chardonnay. Learn about the diversity of white varieties as well as reds like Dornfelder.

If you compare Silvaner with Franken, you can make use of their shared varieties. Prioritize the source region and winemaking over bottle shape or general impressions of the region.

FIELD NOTE 03

Regional size and vineyard information

Wines labeled with broad regional names and those labeled down to village or vineyard differ in the detail provided for place of origin. The more precisely the place of origin is indicated, the easier it is to investigate the land itself.

Yet, the fineness of the labeling alone does not determine aroma or preferences. Continue to check grape variety, vintage, residual sugar, fermentation, and maturation. Together with articles on appellations, distinguish what information placenames do and do not provide.
