FIELD NOTE 01

Major classification

Deutscher Wein is the basic category, above which is Landwein with a geographical indication, and higher still are Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein with appellation of origin. Landwein’s g.g.A. and appellation wines’ g.U. correspond to the EU’s geographical indications.

This classification is not just a name—it is tied to origin, production, and inspection conditions. However, you cannot determine the taste of a specific producer or individual preference based on classification alone.

FIELD NOTE 02

Narrow the scope of origin

DWI explains that new origin labeling rules, based on the 2021 revision, will be mandatory starting with the 2026 vintage. Within g.U., origin is indicated in increasing detail as: Anbaugebiet (region), sub-region, village/area, and vineyard.

Region corresponds to the traditional Bereich or the broader Großlage on labels. Where a vineyard name appears, also see how it is combined with the village name. When comparing older labels with new labeling, be sure to record both the vintage and the period of application.

FIELD NOTE 03

Prädikatswein does not disappear

Even with the introduction of new concepts of appellation, the Prädikat levels like Kabinett will not all disappear. Appellation and raw materials represent different kinds of information.

Erstes Gewächs and Großes Gewächs are also positioned in national regulations. Do not equate labels bearing the VDP trademark with national regulations. Articles about VDP cover the association's designations, while here, pay attention to legal regional frameworks.

Key points of this article

Even after the axis that indicates the scope of origin is clarified, Prädikat remains as a separate axis indicating the conditions of the raw materials.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

Does the new classification for place of origin entirely replace Kabinett and similar categories?
