FIELD NOTE 01
The Bend in the Rhine
Near Wiesbaden, the Rhine turns west, then flows north again near Rüdesheim. This east–west flow and the hills to the north are key to reading the Rheingau on a map.
Simply being alongside the river does not explain the aspect of the slope. If you draw the river's direction on a map and check which side the vineyards are on, descriptions of south-facing slopes become more specific.
FIELD NOTE 02
Riesling and Assmannshausen
While Riesling is the dominant grape, Assmannshausen is known for Spätburgunder. Distinguish between the representative variety of the overall region and notable village-level specialities.
Johannisberg and Eberbach Abbey are good starting points for the history. However, be sure to confirm separately the stories of historical late harvest and the present requirements for Spätlese. Do not interpret today’s labels solely from the historical narratives.
FIELD NOTE 03
Construct a comparison with Mosel.
Even with Riesling, there is a range depending on village, vineyard, and producer. Rather than fixating that 'Mosel means light, Rheingau means full-bodied,' you should check residual sugar and alcohol.
First, write out similarities and differences in topography, then read technical materials. Rivers and slopes are important common features. When explaining differences, choose two specific vineyards to compare, which helps avoid overly broad generalizations.
Check the stretch where the Rhine temporarily flows west and observe the relationship between the vineyards on its north side and the south-facing slopes.
