Beaujolais

Do not memorize Gamay’s regions only by Nouveau. Let names such as Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent guide you towards vineyard and maturation differences.

FIELD NOTE 01

Connect Gamay with place names

To the south of Burgundy lies Beaujolais, where Gamay is the main grape for reds. In addition to Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages, there are crus such as Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent. Understanding the geographical range of place names prepares you to study individual vineyards.

FIELD NOTE 02

How the whole bunch or berries are handled

Traditional winemaking descriptions feature whole cluster fermentation and semi-carbonic maceration. At the bottom of the tank, berries are crushed, and CO₂ produced by juice fermentation surrounds the intact berries at the top.

It is a mechanism involving changes inside the berry and fermentation of the juice by yeast. The duration and extraction decisions differ by producer and wine.

FIELD NOTE 03

Nouveau and Cru

Nouveau serves as an entry point to understand wines intended for early enjoyment. You cannot explain Cru wines using the same post-harvest timing or production methods as Beaujolais Nouveau.

Using Gamay as a common factor and comparing appellation, vintage, maceration, and aging, you can learn about differences in winemaking that go beyond just the grape variety.

Key points of this article

Extraction and maturation differ by appellation and producer. Don’t generalize the characteristics of Nouveau to all Gamay; check the specifications for crus and individual wines.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

Are all Gamay wines made using the same Nouveau-style early-drinking method?
