FIELD NOTE 01
Divide into four
Classify inland as Slavonia-Donau and Croatian Highlands, and coastal as Istria-Kvarner and Dalmatia. With only the image of a long, narrow coastal country, one might overlook the large white wine regions in the east. Place the Danube River, northwestern hills, northern Adriatic, southern peninsulas, and islands on the map.
FIELD NOTE 02
Connect each variety one by one.
The first three pillars are inland Graševina, Istrian Malvazija Istarska, and Dalmatian Plavac Mali. Adding high-altitude Škrlet or Pušipel, the country’s geography and grape distribution correspond. By comparing inland and coastal whites, you can question both climate and winemaking.
FIELD NOTE 03
From vineyard to process
Consider sun exposure and dryness on coastal slopes, and cold and length of ripening period inland. However, do not judge the taste of a single wine based only on regional trends. In the next stage, read the cultivation and maturation conditions for Dingac and producers' actual fermentation and aging separately, distinguishing between the boundaries set by the system and the choices made by the winemaker.
Diverse styles from the four regions: inland whites and sparkling wines, high-altitude indigenous varieties, and coastal whites.
