Atacama and Coquimbo

Read geography, grape resources, and production processes separately.

  • Drought

Check water supply and the location of the vineyard.

  • Coastal

Wind and morning fog help moderate the daytime heat.

  • High altitude

Aside from the sea, altitude changes maturation conditions.

FIELD NOTE 01

Order of the valleys

Locate Copiapó and Huasco in Atacama, and Elqui, Limarí, and Choapa in Coquimbo to the south, on a map. Securing water is essential in these dry regions. Distinguish between vineyards for pisco production and those for wine grapes.

FIELD NOTE 02

Limarí coast and limestone

Tabalí's Talinay is an example from coastal Limarí. There are cold winds from the Pacific and morning fog; Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown on limestone slopes. The presence of limestone is not explained as imparting a rock-like taste directly to the wine.

FIELD NOTE 03

Don't stop at 'the north is hot'

At high elevations far from the sea, altitude also lowers temperatures. The cooling effects of the coast and the mountains differ in terms of wind, fog, and water conditions. For better understanding, compare Casablanca’s wines made from the same varieties before comparing Limarí whites to Maipo reds.

Key points of this article
