FIELD NOTE 01

Curicó winemaking transformation

Curicó has a wide range of red and white varieties. Since 1979, Miguel Torres has introduced stainless steel tanks, fermentation temperature control, and French oak maturation. Consider international market development not only in terms of grape varieties but also changes in winemaking technology.

FIELD NOTE 02

Maule’s old vines and dry farming

In Maule, old vines of Carignan and País are important. VIGNO is an initiative centered around dry-farmed, bush-trained old vine Carignan in southern Maule. It demonstrates the value of old vineyards by combining variety, farming method, and origin.

FIELD NOTE 03

Do not limit Maule to just inland areas

The region is broad, and in the coastal Empedrado there are also examples of Pinot Noir. Miguel Torres's Escaleras de Empedrado uses schist-based coastal vineyards. Do not generalize by saying 'Maule lacks maritime influence' for the entire region; always check vineyard location.

Key points of this article

Cannot be determined. In addition to old-vine Carignan, there is also Pinot Noir from the coastal Empedrado district.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

Can you determine from the name Maule alone that it is always a rich, inland red?
