FIELD NOTE 01
Large northeastern region
Weinviertel is a production region in the northeast of Niederösterreich. It is north of the Danube River—note its relationship to the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The map’s marked point is a representative location to help determine position, not to indicate that the entire region shares the same landscape.
FIELD NOTE 02
DAC and grape varieties.
Weinviertel DAC is made from Grüner Veltliner grown in this region. In addition to matching the grape variety, it must also pass a sensory test for regional typicity. This is why you should read both the grape variety and the region name.
DAC, Reserve, and Grosse Reserve each have different conditions. Do not automatically apply alcohol or style requirements from standard categories to all upper-tier wines.
FIELD NOTE 03
Compare the same grape variety across different regions
When comparing Grüner Veltliner from Wachau, first make a table with the DAC region, designation range, and additional indications. Then check the alcohol, vintage, and vinification vessels.
We want to avoid both the prediction that 'the same variety always produces the same taste', and the prediction that 'being from a different region means any difference is solely due to geography'. Align your comparison conditions, and separately record what you confirmed from materials and your own tasting impressions.
Requirements differ depending on the classification. In addition to origin and grape variety, also check for supplementary terms such as Reserve.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
