The role of IP, IG, and DOC on labels: points for comparison

FIELD NOTE 01

Three indications of origin.

Origin law establishes IP (Indicación de Procedencia), IG (Indicación Geográfica), and DOC (Denominación de Origen Controlada). IG emphasizes the link between quality or characteristics and geographic origin; DOC emphasizes the connection with the region, including natural conditions and human practices, as well as production regulations.

FIELD NOTE 02

Do not decide DOC status based on place name alone.

Luján de Cuyo DOC is a representative example. However, not all wines produced in that region are necessarily labeled as DOC. We check the approved scope, usage conditions, and how it is actually displayed on labels. Famous vineyards or place names do not automatically qualify as DOC either.

FIELD NOTE 03

Maturation indication is a separate axis.

Reserva and Gran Reserva are not appellations; they are terms that specify requirements for grape sources and maturation. The meaning of these terms changes by country. Compare with the article on Chile to extract region, grape varieties, and maturation as separate pieces of information.
