Tintilia: Reading Molise reds by vineyard and vessel

We study Molise’s Tintilia through the 2021 vintage by Di Majo Norante. Review skin contact, malolactic fermentation, and the use of two different vessels in order.

Questions for this course

If you age the same wine separately in barrels and tanks, does it become a blend of different grape varieties?

Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Molise’s varieties and a single document

The 2021 Tintilia del Molise DOC by Di Majo Norante is a red wine made from 100% Tintilia. Source material indicates vineyards at 300–350 meters altitude, with limestone and clay soils. Read these as features relevant only to the source vineyards for this wine, not typical of all of Molise.

Skin contact and acid changes

For the 2021 vintage, there was about one month of skin contact, followed by malolactic fermentation. The steps of extracting components from the skins and the conversion of malic acid to lactic acid are distinct processes. Do not summarize this as a single 'fermentation'—explain what is changing at each step.

Aging separated lots

Part of the maturation is done in wooden barrels, part in stainless steel tanks, and the wine also rests about six months in bottle. Even if two types of vessels are used, the only grape variety is Tintilia. As the ratio of barrels to tanks is not specified in the sources, record the details as is without assuming a half-and-half proportion.

1. Why can it still be called a single-variety wine if separated into wooden barrels and tanks?
2. The mention of about one month refers to what period?
3. How do you write the ratio of barrels to tanks?

By answering in the selection field, you can compare your answers and explanations using the top button. Freeform responses will not be automatically graded.

Why can a wine be called a single-variety even when portions are matured in both wood barrels and tanks?
Whether it is a single variety is determined by the grape composition. Even if 100% Tintilia wine is divided into separate containers, the number of varieties does not increase. Distinguish between combining container-based lots and blending multiple varieties.

About 1 month: What period does this refer to?
Approximately one month stated in the product documentation refers to the period of skin contact. It does not include the total duration of malolactic fermentation or aging. The word "about" should be kept as an approximation, and by describing each process in sequence you can explain where time was invested during production.

How should you state the ratio of wood barrel to tank aging?
The description "some in barrels, some in tanks" does not necessarily mean half and half. What is confirmed in the sources is only that both vessel types were used. By recording only what is verifiable, without supplementing figures, you can compare accurately with products from other years.
