Upper and lower slope
The vineyard slopes gently westward, with more gravel in the upper sections and increasingly clay-dominated soils at lower levels. Even within the same château, soils differ, so portraying Pomerol as a vineyard of a single type of clay obscures such block-to-block variation.
Selection from the northeast section
Since 2009, Esperance has been made from selected plots in the northeast of the property, mainly with gravelly soils. Official descriptions state it is only produced in limited years. In addition to its second wine positioning, this provides a case where you can verify which sites are selected.
Current vineyard versus historic wines.
As of the confirmation, the official website lists the vineyard’s varietal composition as 100% Merlot. This description reflects the current vineyard. When researching blends from past vintages, refer separately to the technical sheets for those years.

- Did you note that it is only for limited years?
- Ask whether current plantings are being described with blends from the past.
