Jacques Selosse: The base village and cultivation history
This producer is a family-owned estate based in Avize, Côte des Blancs. In addition to Avize, they own vineyards in Cramant, Oger, Le Mesnil, Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, and Ambonnay.
Check the scope of Selosse’s vineyards, based in Avize, and read about how their cultivation policy has changed over time.
Questions for this course
If a producer is based in Avize, does that mean all their raw material comes from Avize?
Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Distribution of base locations and vineyards
Selosse is based in Avize, but its vineyards extend to multiple villages in the Côte des Blancs, as well as to Aÿ and Ambonnay. Based on the address alone, you cannot explain that all their cuvées are single-village wines from Avize.
Approach is changing.
According to the official history, organic farming principles were practiced from 1990 to 1996, biodynamics was trialed from 1996, and since 2002 some distance has been taken from that framework. Do not treat one period’s practice as a permanent label.
Distinguish viticultural philosophy from certification.
The current explanation focuses on unique family cultivation decisions and how they respond to conditions each year. You cannot determine from this text alone whether there is current certification. Introductions to cultivation policy and checking for certification labels are handled separately.

Reading Jacque Selosse documents: the base village and cultivation history
Compare the stated conditions in the documentation. Numbers specifying vintages should be treated as information for that specific year.
This summarizes materials published by producers, regional groups, and importers. Each source includes the publisher and the date the material was checked.

Vineyard distribution?
Distinguish between the address of the producer and the location of the vineyard.
Can you make definitive statements from 1996 practices to the present?
A change in thinking since 2002 is explained.
What is necessary to understand certification?
Philosophy, practice, and third-party certification are different types of information. The history shows a change in approach after 2002. The fact that biodynamics was practiced at a certain time does not serve as evidence of current third-party certification. Confirm practice and certification with separate materials.

Explain in your own words
Describe the headquarters, vineyard distribution, and history of cultivation of Selosse, and clearly differentiate any aspects regarding certification that are not confirmed.
Check after writing
- Did you specify the label, vintage, and scope of materials to be compared?
- Did you distinguish and explain the three items in the table?
- Did you separate verified facts from points to check further with additional references or tasting?
