Niepoort: From Port to vineyards across the regions

This is a family-run producer in Portugal active since 1842. Beginning with Port from the Douro, they have expanded to unfortified red and white wines, as well as wines from Dão and Bairrada. Within a single producer, you can compare the terroir and types of wines made.

Using the introductions of wineries and vineyards as clues, we will clarify the fortified and non-fortified wines of the Douro and their expansion to other regions. We will read the distinctions under a shared producer name.

Questions for this course

Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Two types of wine made in Douro

The official history states that Niepoort began producing unfortified Douro wines in 1990. Even with the same producer name, differentiate between Port and red or white Douro wines. The Douro name alone does not determine whether a wine is fortified.

A one-to-one relationship does not always exist between wineries and products.

Vale de Mendiz is a center for port winemaking and uses traditional granite circular lagares. However, the Charmes produced at the same winery is an unfortified red. You cannot determine if a wine is port solely from the winery name or the barrel’s material.

In Dão, old vineyards are inherited and maintained.

At Quinta da Lomba in Dão, preserving old vines was the aim of acquisition. In the early stages, grapes purchased from local growers were vinified at another winery; since 2014, estate fruit and purchased grapes have been made at their own winery. Confirm vineyard ownership, sourcing of raw material, and location of winemaking separately.

To Baga in Bairrada

At Quinta de Baixo in Bairrada, Baga is emphasized, with lime and sandy soils and the cool, damp influence of the Atlantic highlighted. In related grape courses, you can learn about Baga, Dão's Encruzado, and Touriga Nacional, which is also used in Douro. Note that the listed varieties are not used in the same proportions in every product.

By answering in the selection field, you can compare your answers and explanations using the top button. Freeform responses will not be automatically graded.

Which of the following is correct about Niepoort's Douro wines?
The official history notes the development of Douro wines from Port to unfortified wines. While the region and producer names may be the same, it is necessary to confirm the type of each specific wine.

What is Charmes made at Vale de Mendiz?
It is explained that both Port and non-fortified Charm are produced at the same winery. This is a concrete example showing that simply sharing a production site does not determine whether a wine is fortified.

In which region is Quinta de Baixo located?
Quinta de Baixo is a base in Bairrada, notable for explaining Baga and the influence of the Atlantic. Do not group producers’ various regional wines together; match their base with their region.

Explain in your own words

Please organize Niepoort's wines by three categories: producer, region, and whether or not they are fortified. Include one example of a case where the wine type cannot be determined even at the same winery.

Check after writing

  • Did you distinguish between producer name and origin?
  • Did you use the Charme example?
  • Have you included the related varieties in the blends of all your products?
