Chateau Montelena: Napa Base and Sources for Chardonnay
Chateau Montelena is a winery located in Calistoga, in the northern part of Napa Valley. They craft Chardonnay and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon; their 1973 Chardonnay became famous after the 1976 Paris blind tasting. To distinguish the historical wine from the current lineup, consider the source of the grapes.
We will read about a historic 1973 Chardonnay and two labels from Napa and Sonoma, vintage 2022. Emphasis is placed on the origin of the grapes, which cannot be determined by producer name alone.

Distinguish between 1973 and 1976
The famous Chardonnay vintage is 1973, and the Paris tasting was in 1976. According to official records, the grapes used in this 1973 vintage came from both Napa and Sonoma. Having the winery in Napa and the historical wine using only Napa fruit are not the same thing.
In 2022, there are separate labels for Napa and Sonoma.
The 2022 Sonoma County Chardonnay is introduced as a separate label made from Sonoma-grown grapes. When comparing it with the Napa Valley Chardonnay of the same year, first check the region stated on the label. Even with the same producer, grape variety, and year, the source of the grapes will differ.
The barrel figure refers to the 2022 conditions in Napa.
The technical sheet for the 2022 Napa Valley Chardonnay specifies 100% Chardonnay, 10 months in French oak, with 25% new barrels. 25% new oak does not mean that only 25% of the wine is put into barrels. Also, do not explain these specifications as automatically applying to Sonoma’s different label.

Compare the stated conditions in the documentation. Numbers specifying vintages should be treated as information for that specific year.
This summarizes materials published by producers, regional groups, and importers. Each source includes the publisher and the date the material was checked.
| Comparison items | What can be determined from the materials | Ability to distinguish by reading |
|---|---|---|
| A historic bottle | The 1973 Chardonnay became known at the 1976 Paris tasting | Raw materials at the time were Napa and Sonoma |
| Two labels from 2022 | Napa Valley Chardonnay and Sonoma County Chardonnay | Even if producer, grape, and year are the same, the origin of the fruit may differ |
| Napa 2022 Barrel Aging | 100% Chardonnay, 10 months in French oak, 25% new barrels | Check separately from Sonoma’s production requirements |

What does 1976 represent?
The Paris tasting event took place in 1976, and the vintage of Chardonnay presented was 1973. When examining history, separate the year of the event from the wine’s vintage. The official record explains that this 1973 fruit was sourced from both Napa and Sonoma.
For the two 2022 Chardonnay labels, what is the first distinction to make?
Even Chardonnay made by the same producer and year may use grapes from Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Do not assume both are from Napa just by the winery’s location. Use the origin stated on the label as your starting point.
How should we interpret 25% new oak for Napa 2022?
The technical sheet states 10 months in French oak, 25% of which was new barrels. The new barrel percentage refers to the use of new barrels, not the proportion of wine unaged in barrels. Retain that the conditions are for Napa 2022 as specified in the material.
