Domaine Leroy: Differences between Domaine and Maison
Domaine Leroy is a Burgundy domaine where Lalou Bize-Leroy develops wines from her own vineyards. Even though all bear the Leroy name, Maison Leroy, which handles négociant wines, and Domaine d'Auvenay are distinct and should be considered separately.
I will explain the differences between a Maison, a Domaine, and d’Auvenay, and list the sections of the label to check when researching the origin of a bottle you purchased.
Questions for this course

One family name, three different labels
The importer’s 2016 documents separate Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy, and Domaine d’Auvenay. Don’t lump all under the name Leroy; otherwise, the distinction between estate wines and those made from purchased grapes is lost.
Maison and Domaine
The Maison began in 1868 as a négociant, responsible for selecting wines and making decisions on maturation and shipping. The Domaine, established in 1988, has a production structure that includes cultivating its own vineyards. For each, origin must still be confirmed by label.
Read Dauvnet separately as well.
This material also presents Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (Duvné) as being from its own estate vineyards. If labeled under a different name, you cannot transfer vineyard area or cultivation descriptions from one to the other. The material used here is from the 2016 edition, so don't use it to confirm the current vineyard area or all marketed labels.

What can't be determined by the Leroy family name alone?
Cross-check Maison, Domaine, and d’Auvenay. A Maison is involved in selection and maturation of purchased wines, whereas a Domaine includes cultivating its own vineyards. Do not transfer information about vineyards or viticulture from one to the other simply based on a shared family name.
What is described as the role of a Maison?
A négociant’s role also includes selecting and judging the maturation of wines.
How should the 2016 materials be used?
The verification date of an old document and the year the information is based on are separate.
