Same year, different vineyards

The 2019 single-vineyard series from Henschke includes both Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone Shiraz. You can compare which vineyard’s grapes are used by matching producer, region, variety, and vintage.

Initial planting and thereafter

At Hill of Grace, the first vine was planted around 1860, with other plots planted later. The 'original planting year' does not represent the average vine age or evidence that the whole vineyard was planted simultaneously.

1912 Mount Edelstone

Mount Edelstone is a vineyard planted in 1912, and has been produced as a single-vineyard wine since 1952. By distinguishing year of planting, the first release as a named wine, and the vintage of the bottle, you can convey the chronology of old vine wine accurately.

By answering in the selection field, you can compare your answers and explanations using the top button. Freeform responses will not be automatically graded.

What does the date around 1860 mean?
The generation of vines within the vineyard is not always uniform. The year the first vines were planted and the years for subsequently planted plots differ. When old vines remain, do not automatically assume all vines in the vineyard are of the same age; the planting history must be read plot by plot.

What does 1952 refer to?
Separate the history of the vineyard and that of the brand.

What are the shared conditions between the two wines from 2019?
Compare the fixed conditions and the varying conditions separately.

Explain in your own words

Introduce two vineyards and write an explanation that does not confuse planting year, brand launch year, and harvest year.

Check after writing

  • Did you specify the label, vintage, and scope of materials to be compared?
  • Did you distinguish and explain the three items in the table?
  • Did you separate verified facts from points to check further with additional references or tasting?
