Petit Verdot: considering small proportions in blends from the perspective of ripeness

Petite Verdot, a grape with deep color and firm tannins. Consider not only the proportion in the blend, but also how fully these late-ripening grapes were allowed to mature.

Questions for this course

If the blending ratio is small, is the role in flavor also minor?

Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Black varieties used in Bordeaux blends

Petit Verdot is a black grape variety used in Bordeaux reds. The CIVB highlights its deep color, firm tannins, and spicy aromas. Even in small proportions, it affects texture; therefore, distinguish the size of the proportion from the significance of its role.

Budburst and ripening occur in separate periods

This variety buds early and ripens rather late. There is a risk of spring frost and also a question of whether sufficient ripeness can be achieved before harvest, both occurring within the same vineyard. 'Late ripening protects from spring frost' is not an accurate explanation. Specify the growth stage you refer to.

Do not calculate taste from blend ratios

Even if small amounts are added for structure, the same ratio does not suit all wines. For comparison, look at ripeness, extraction, and blending varieties. Confirm Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends using product documentation specifying harvest year.

1. What does the trait 'late ripening' indicate?
2. According to the material, what is the function of adding a small amount?
3. What cannot be determined from only the blend ratio?

What does the characteristic of late-ripening indicate?
Late ripening is a characteristic of fruit maturation timing. As it can occur alongside early budbreak, assess spring and autumn risks separately.

What role is indicated in the documents for adding a small amount?
CIVB describes the contribution to tannin, aroma, and texture. It does not mean sweet/dry adjustment.

What cannot be decided from blend ratios alone?
Even with the same ratio, differences in maturity, extraction, and pairing grape varieties mean that identical flavor cannot be inferred from the numbers alone.
