Mencía / Study by Grape

Aliases & spellings: Mencia

Update date: 2026-09-24

Main black grape variety of Bierzo

Mencía is the main black grape of Bierzo. The regional council describes it in official documentation as a variety that has adapted and spread in the area. When studying Spanish reds, don’t limit comparisons to Tempranillo—also expand to include northwest Mencía.

Also used in Valdeorras

Red wines using Mencía are also found in Valdeorras, a neighboring northwestern region. According to the regulatory council, Valdeorras Mencía must contain at least 85% Mencía. Even when a grape variety is stated on the label, it does not necessarily mean it is 100%.

What conditions remain to be compared between the two wines?

Even with Mencía as a shared factor, vineyards, blending, maceration, and aging can differ. Before attributing differences between the two regions’ reds only to terroir, use product information to check these aspects. Especially, record separately the regulatory minimum of “at least 85%” and the actual blend composition of the bottle at hand.

What is Bierzo’s main black grape variety?
The material from the region cites Mencía as the main grape variety. This serves as the entry point for reds from the northwest.

What can definitely be determined from the explanation of more than 85%?
Blends exceeding the lower limit are also possible. Check separately if the product is 100%.

Can you call the differences between the two reds mere land differences?
This is a comparison where multiple factors other than grape variety change. Take care not to mix explanations of the land and winemaking.
