The black grape varieties rooted in Bolzano
Lagrein is a black variety of Alto Adige, with the local consortium introducing its ties to Bolzano. Aromas of the red include berries, cherries, and violets. Start by focusing from the wider scope of northern Italy down to the particular location of the town.
Kretzer is the term for rosé
Lagrein rosé is also called Kretzer. More names do not mean more grape varieties. When comparing red and rosé, clarify that they share a grape variety but differ in color and winemaking method.
There are choices to be made in red wine ageing as well.
The association also introduces reds matured in small oak barrels. However, this does not guarantee that all wines labeled Lagrein use barrels. When comparing to rosé, check not only the color but also information on skin contact and maturation vessel in product materials.
