Carricante / Learn from grape varieties

Update date: 2026-09-23

White grapes grown on steep slopes

Carricante is the flagship white grape of Etna and is grown even in vineyards at high elevation. The regional protection association explains that it can be planted where Nerello Mascalese struggles to ripen. The best spots for red and white do not fully overlap. On the eastern Milo slope, producers such as Benanti make focused single-plot Carricante whites, providing concrete examples that link grape and site.

Conditions for Miro and Bianco Superiore

Etna Bianco requires at least 60% Carricante and Bianco Superiore at least 80%. Additionally, grapes for the latter must come from a designated area in Milo. A higher percentage alone does not qualify as Superiore. Also, the legal minimum percentages are separate from the actual blend in a bottle; there are examples of regular Bianco with 100% Carricante. By reading the label, origin, and blend together, you can distinguish them.

Aging on lees in stainless steel

According to the official product information from Benanti, their Pietra Marina is kept in contact with fine lees in stainless steel tanks for about 30 months, then matured in bottle for 12 months. Even for long-aged white wines, oak barrels are not always used. Their Etna Bianco is also noted as being matured with lees in stainless steel, but the period in bottle after bottling is 2–3 months. It is important to read not only the type of vessel, but also how the lees are managed and the duration at each stage.

What is the actual blend for Etna Bianco?
The official product information states 100% Carricante. The minimum proportion for Etna Bianco is 60%, but this does not mean the actual blend is always fixed at 60%. Distinguish between the regulatory range and each product’s specifications.

What maturation vessel did Pietra Marina use for about 30 months?
Approximately 30 months in the source refers to time spent in stainless steel on fine lees. The subsequent 12 months of bottle aging is a separate stage, with no mention of wood barrels. Do not assume barrel aging just because this is a long-aged white; always check which vessel is used at each stage.

Can you calculate the difference in lees contact period between the two wines?
Although contact with lees is mentioned for Etna Bianco, the number of months is not specified. You cannot substitute the 2–3 months of bottle aging for this period. To calculate differences, you need the duration of the same step in both examples.

Explain in your own words

Show the common and different conditions between the two wines, and list a stage not possible to calculate the difference in months from the documentation alone.

Check after writing

  • Did you indicate that the same variety can have differing districts or styles?
  • Are you confusing stainless steel and wooden barrels?
  • Have you not filled in unrecorded periods with assumptions?
