White grape varieties of Piemonte
Arneis is a white grape variety long cultivated in southern Piemonte. Even in regions known for reds like Nebbiolo and Barbera, white wines have their own history. The label Roero Arneis allows you to distinguish between place name and grape variety.
Differences from red Roero
The Roero Protection Consortium aligns red Roero with Nebbiolo and white Roero Arneis with Arneis. Do not assume that common place names mean the ingredients are the same. When comparing the same region, first arrange by color and variety.
Winemaking conditions that alter color tone
The protection association also introduces that short skin contact and oak use can affect the color shades of whites. A deeper yellow does not always mean a different grape variety. Even when comparing young whites, check for skin contact, vessel type, and aging period.

Arneis is the main white variety, Nebbiolo the main red. Even within the same place name, grape varieties are different.
What do the two wines have in common?
There are commonalities within a region, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the same parcel or winemaking method is shared.
What materials are used to consider differences in white wine color tones?
For Arneis, skin contact and vessel may vary. Do not identify the grape variety just by appearance—read the winemaking documentation.
