Cortese: the support of Gavi
Gavi is an appellation spanning several comuni in the Alessandria province of Piedmont and produces white wine from Cortese. If you distinguish between the place name Gavi and the grape name Cortese, you can avoid misattributing vineyard locations based solely on village names.
Inland hills and maritime influence
The region is affected by winds from the Ligurian Sea and the Apennine Mountains. The Consorzio notes cold winters, warm and breezy summers, the elevation and orientation of hills, and marl, limestone, and clay soils. Do not generalize the climate based solely on the name of the province; check the position of the southernmost hills.
White wines also vary in bubbles and aging
The Consorzio introduces the types of still, frizzante, spumante, and riserva in Gavi. Even when using the Cortese grape, differences in sparkling style or ageing requirements mean the comparison is not the same. Check each wine’s type before considering flavor distinctions.

What is the relationship between Cortese and Gavi?
Cortese is a grape variety, and Gavi is a geographical appellation. Although both may appear in the description of the same white wine, the types of information are different. By organizing variety and appellation separately, you can compare wines made from the same grape and study the definition of the production zone independently.
What environmental features does the source mention for Gavi?
The Consorzio mentions winds from the sea, the influence of the Apennines, the orientations of hills, and soil differences. The name Piemonte alone is not enough to describe vineyard conditions. After confirming the region on a map, supplement with data about the elevation and aspect of individual vineyards.
What should you check before comparing two bottles of Gavi?
Gavi produces several types of wine. Even if the raw grape variety is the same, sparkling or aging differences mean that the bases for comparing aroma and texture vary. First check the wine’s type on the label, then use the producer’s records to confirm that bottle’s specific details.
