Albariño / Learning from grape varieties

Synonym/Label: Alvarinho / Albariño / Alvarinho

Update date: 2026-09-23

Links with Alvarinho

Spanish Albariño and Portuguese Alvarinho are the same variety. In Portugal, Monção and Melgaço in the northern Vinho Verde region are representative growing areas. After aligning variety names across the border, compare vineyard location and each producer’s methods. Being the same variety does not mean the wines taste the same.

Pergola training systems in rain-prone vineyards

In Rías Baixas, you find vineyards where grapes are grown on high trellises. The fruit is raised off the ground to allow airflow, adapting to rainy and humid conditions. These trellises are both a feature of the landscape and a method to keep the fruit healthy. There are also vertically trained (espalier) vineyards in the region, so not all vines are grown the same way.

Read lees and barrel separately

Some Albariño wines are aged on lees after fermentation. Compounds released from the lees influence aroma and mouthfeel. Whether to use barrels or not is a matter of vessel choice. When “sobre lías” (with lees) is noted, adding information on the maturation vessel and period allows you to concretely compare winemaking of the same variety.

What is the relationship between the grape varieties of A and B?
Albariño is called Alvarinho in Portugal. Rías Baixas and Vinho Verde are regional names—distinguish them from the grape name.

What process is recorded for B?
B is kept in contact with fine lees in stainless steel tanks. The information that lees aging was conducted does not imply barrels were used.

What is a starting point for considering differences in mouthfeel?
The difference highlighted in the table is contact with the lees. Since other factors also affect the texture, be sure to compare production notes with tastings.
