FIELD NOTE 01

Merlot-focused southern area

In southern Ticino, Merlot holds an important place. Although the region has abundant sunshine, it is also rainy, so do not assume it is dry just because it is further south. Comparing it to the dry Rhône Valley shows the range of conditions within Switzerland.

FIELD NOTE 02

North and South of Chenery (Cheneli)

In the north's Sopraceneri, focus on steep terraces and valleys; in the south's Sottoceneri, note the vineyards around Lugano, Mendrisio, and Chiasso. Granite and gneiss dominate in the north, clay and limestone in the south, but these do not alone determine taste.

FIELD NOTE 03

The same variety, different color.

Not only reds—there is also Merlot Bianco, made as a white wine. The name of the black grape variety and the wine color are not classified in the same way. In the detailed article, technical materials for Bianco Rovere trace the stages from gentle pressing through fermentation and aging in barrel.
