FIELD NOTE 01
French-speaking area of the west
Place the upstream Rhône valley, Vaud around Lake Geneva, and Geneva at the lake's western tip. The Vallée is an Alpine valley, while the Vaud is characterized by hills and terraces overlooking the lake—so even neighboring regions can have very different terrain.
FIELD NOTE 02
Connecting north and south
German-speaking Switzerland spans multiple cantons, including Zurich, Schaffhausen, and Graubünden. To the south of the Alps lies the Italian-speaking Ticino. Map out the northeastern area centered on Pinot Noir, and the southern region focused on Merlot.
FIELD NOTE 03
Include the lake region
The Three Lakes area refers to the surroundings of Lakes Neuchâtel, Biel, and Murten. The six regions do not represent six administrative cantons, but include cross-cantonal areas and those mainly centered in one canton. Once you grasp the overall picture, review geography and varieties in the regions section, and revisit synonyms and winemaking details in dedicated articles.
They are not identical. Read German-speaking regions and the Three Lakes area as regions comprising multiple states.
