FIELD NOTE 01

Distinguishing 100% from 85%

For origins indicated by WO, the standard is 100% grapes from that area. For single-variety and vintage statements, the standard is at least 85%. Do not lump all three together as 85%; first read the place name, then the variety, and finally the year.

FIELD NOTE 02

Understand the magnitude of the range.

There are units of different geographic size such as Geographical Unit, Region, District, and Ward. However, a Ward is not always within a District. Rather than equating smaller area with better quality, consider how specifically the source of the grapes is limited.

FIELD NOTE 03

Vineyard and estate

Single Vineyard refers to registered plots up to a maximum of 6ha. For Estate Wine, in addition to cultivation within a consolidated estate, winemaking and bottling on that estate are also required. Different pieces of information should be distinguished: vineyard size, delimitation of origin, and bottling location.

Key points of this article

No. For indication of origin, 100% is required; for single grape variety and vintage, the standard is at least 85% each.
