FIELD NOTE 01

Location of Murfatlar

Murfatlar is situated in southeastern Dobruja, between the Danube River and the Black Sea. With strong sunlight and a warm growing season, both white and red wines can be studied here. Do not judge it solely as a cool climate region just because it is near the sea; also check for hot summers and low rainfall.

FIELD NOTE 02

Soil and style.

There are vineyards with loess or limestone subsoils, and Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Muscat varieties, Merlot, and Cabernet are cultivated here. While noting the region's sweet wine history, be sure to read about dry styles too. You can't determine residual sugar or oak use from soil names alone.

FIELD NOTE 03

Dividing river terraces

On the official regional division, Dobrogea Hills and Danube Terraces are listed separately. Do not assume all wines near the Danube are from the same region or DOC; place the origin from the label on the map. Distinguish between geographic elements—sea, river, hills—and the boundaries of legal appellations.
