FIELD NOTE 01
Cooperative founded in 1958
Produttori del Barbaresco is a growers' cooperative founded in 1958. It produces wine from Nebbiolo grown by its members.
Even if there are multiple cultivators who farm the vineyard, the winery may be common to all. Knowing the work of the vineyard and that of the winery separately makes the cooperative structure concrete.
FIELD NOTE 02
Riserva and blends with vineyard names
There are Riserva wines named after vineyards, and Barbaresco made from blends of multiple vineyard sites. A single producer may produce both wines that highlight differences in land and those that combine several plots.
Being a cooperative alone does not determine whether their wines are uniform. How each parcel’s grapes are handled is necessary for that explanation.
FIELD NOTE 03
Comparison within the same producer
When comparing wines from different vineyard sites, also align the vintage and specifications for each wine. Even if the producer is the same, the harvest conditions can differ from vineyard to vineyard.
In official documents, you can distinguish between the history of the union and the descriptions of individual wines. The year of establishment concerns the organization's history, while details such as vineyard names and winemaking information pertain to a specific wine.
At Produttori, a single winery vinifies multiple growers’ vineyards, both as single-vineyard and blended wines.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
Because this is a cooperative, can we conclude they do not make single-vineyard wines?
Read the explanation +
Not possible. Produttori produces both riservas with vineyard names and Barbaresco from blended vineyards. The management style and the range of wines are separate pieces of information.
