FIELD NOTE 01

East of the Southern Alps

This is a region along the eastern coast of the South Island, expanding northward from around Christchurch. With mountains to the west and the sea to the east, it enjoys a long growing season with cool, relatively dry conditions. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling are important varieties.

FIELD NOTE 02

Waipara Valley

Waipara is a small subregion to the north, where some vineyards are sheltered by surrounding hills. Soils include gravels, clays, and limestone-derived earths, and conditions are not the same as on the plains. The dry northwesterly wind can create viticultural challenges, so do not attribute everything only to the cold maritime winds.

FIELD NOTE 03

Read sweetness/dryness by residual sugar and acidity.

The flavor range of Riesling spans from dry to dessert wine. Even with intense aromas of citrus and flowers, it is not necessarily sweet. When tasting, first record sweetness and acidity separately, then compare how long the fruitiness lingers in the mouth.

Key points of this article

Aroma alone is not enough to determine this. The wines range from dry to sweet, so check for the balance between residual sugar and acidity.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

If Waipara Riesling is highly aromatic, can you judge it to be sweet?
