FIELD NOTE 01

Three subregions

The producers' association identifies three sub-regions: the Bugeac plain, the hills and forests of Tigheci, and the Prut terraces. By learning not only the name of the PGI but also investigating which geographical feature the vineyards are in, you can better grasp the geographical diversity of the southwest.

FIELD NOTE 02

Learning about southern reds

Start with reds such as Cabernet, Merlot, and Fetească Neagră, then add whites and sparkling wines. Even within the south, wind and temperature differ between plains and hills. Don’t explain only by heat—also check slopes, soils, and water access conditions.

FIELD NOTE 03

Compare with the eastern region

When comparing with Ștefan Vodă, first choose wines of the same variety and similar vintage. Next, examine the origin of the raw materials, the type of barrel, and the aging period. If you remember the river name along with the southwest and southeast directions, you are less likely to confuse these two southern PGIs.
