FIELD NOTE 01
Geography and soils
The canton of Grevenmacher serves as a clue for considering the more northerly vineyards along the Mosel River. The official AOP government site describes shell limestone as a characteristic soil. Place names provide a detailed entry point to vineyard locations, but not all vineyards within the same administrative area share identical conditions.
FIELD NOTE 02
Relationship with wine
When studying varieties such as Riesling, consider slope orientation, soil depth, drainage, and water retention. Don't decide glass aromas solely from limestone names; instead, consider how the root environment and ripening are affected. If you line up the same variety as from the Remich side, you can form comparative questions including winemaking.
FIELD NOTE 03
To individual vineyard
When you go down to the Lieu-dit of a vineyard, your learning progresses from general regional descriptions to the characteristics of individual sites. Do not assume that a single-vineyard wine is necessarily unoaked, dry, or destined for long aging. Add technical information such as harvest dates and fermentation or aging details, and record the fineness of the origin and the winemaking characteristics separately in your notes.
