FIELD NOTE 01

There are geographical differences even on the southern islands.

Crete is a large island in southern Greece with a long history of vine cultivation. Do not assume uniform viticultural conditions just from the island’s name; research the elevation and slope of the vineyards and their distance from the sea.

Even when learning about both as island wines, Santorini does not necessarily share the same topography or vine training. It's important to proceed from large categories such as country or island to each individual place.

FIELD NOTE 02

Leading grape varieties for both white and red

For whites: Vilana, Vidiano, Dafni, Thrapsathiri; for reds: Kotsifali, Mandilaria, Liatiko, etc. Organizing solely by international varieties can overlook grapes inherited within regions.

When there are many varieties, first separate white and red, then check technical data for leading labels to identify ingredients. Do not automatically assume a blend from separate grape names.

FIELD NOTE 03

Distinguish between PDO and PGI

Names include Peza, Arhanes, Dafnes, Sitia, and Handakas-Candia, and there are wines from PGI Crete. Do not treat the name of the island and specific PDOs as the same region.

In your comparison notes, record the origin, grape composition, sweetness/dryness, and use of drying or barrel aging. If the same grape has different appellation names, this information becomes an entry point to investigate what is defined by regulations and what is determined by the producer.

Key points of this article

The entire island and specific appellations are separate units. Check the official PDO/PGI labeling and their geographic areas.
