FIELD NOTE 01

Biobío and Malleco

Biobío and Malleco are cool-climate southern regions. Focus on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. On the other hand, Biobío also has old vines of País, so do not reduce southern history only to cool-climate international varieties.

FIELD NOTE 02

Further southern region

Austral includes Cautín and Osorno, and current wine law also lists Chiloé. When examining these new regions, distinguish between viticultural trials, legally designated names, and wines actually available in the market.

FIELD NOTE 03

Consider the map’s edges.

Whether there’s enough sunlight and heat, how to avoid rain at harvest, and which grape varieties and vineyards to choose become important. Don’t assume southern regions are always light; check both acidity and fruit ripeness. When compared to the northern coastal zone, you can learn about different cooling mechanisms.

Key points of this article

No. In addition to the coolness due to southern latitude, the cooling effect of the sea along the northern and central coasts is also important.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

Should you only look to southern Chile for cool-climate wines?
