FIELD NOTE 01

Organize the southeast by state

In South Australia, focus on the areas around Adelaide and the Limestone Coast; in Victoria, use Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula as gateways; and in New South Wales, start with Hunter Valley. Narrow down the location in two steps: from state to region.

FIELD NOTE 02

Adding west and islands

At the southwest tip of Western Australia is Margaret River, and on the south coast is Great Southern. On the mainland's southern island, Tasmania makes cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines.

FIELD NOTE 03

Read about cooling factors beyond latitude

In the southern hemisphere, it generally gets cooler as you go further south, but elevation and oceanic influence are also important. Overlay high-altitude sites such as Orange, Canberra, Adelaide Hills, and Eden Valley onto the map. When you add in large inland regions, you see the full range of production, from small quantities of prestige wines to everyday wines.

FIELD NOTE 04

There are highlands located further north as well

For Queensland, focus on the Granite Belt, located southwest of Brisbane. High elevations moderate temperatures even at low latitudes, allowing cultivation of Chardonnay, Shiraz, and others. This is an example where a vineyard’s coolness cannot be judged solely by its southern position.

Key points of this article

There are also high-altitude and cool regions on the mainland influenced by the sea. Combine latitude, altitude, and ocean.
